Actually more than working it, because he's doing multiple things or has multiple layers. So it's not just the acting and directing (and whatever else he did on set and behind the scenes) it is that his character is quite - colorful and diverse to put it mildly.
He also is someone who swears a lot. It is a condition but try to explain that to someone. Norton does a wonderful job portraying something that is not easy. But he knows his way around outside/inside and more than one layer of character in his roles. This is a love letter to detective movies and movies of the past. It is also a matter of taste. Some will like it and some will question the pacing (which for what it is, is perfect and in tune with the theme it portrays. all in the eye of the beholder - or detective I guess.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit had nearly the exact same plot. Saw Motherless Brooklyn twice now. Really good movie but it's not a masterpiece. It's an exceptional first attempt at a vanity project but the downside is that this genre has been played out. The last attempt at a noir film was Black Dahlia and it was a flop. Motherless Brooklyn is a great film and one of the finest films in sometime which has starred Edward Norton. However it does suffer from narrative flaws and directorial debut issues
It does have a great throwback to the 1950s noir genre. Mainly in style and story. However that being said it is slightly overlong and by the end feels like the story could be cut. However pacing was fine.
Edward Norton stole the show here. He is terrific and plays a man with tourettes extremely well. Everyone else is great here as well, Baldwin, Dafoe and Willis and Mbatha-Raw give such great performances. It's great to see Bruce Willis in a role he actually cares about cause we all know how his career has been recently even if his performance is short in screen time. It's a great throwback to what made noir and crime films so great and even at.144 minutes. The pacing isn't really an issue at all. br>
Overall it's a great film even if slightly stretched. It does suffer from amateurish redirecting. But I would love to see something from Norton again in the future.
